Nobody compliments a plasterer, but every judgement about a finished room is really a judgement about the plastering underneath it.
Preparation is most of the job
Decorating that fails does so because of preparation, not paint. Filling, caulking, sanding back and priming take longer than the topcoats and are the reason a job still looks right in three years. We do not skip that stage and we do not price as if we will.
Old walls need the right specification
Solid stone walls and lath and plaster ceilings do not behave like modern plasterboard. Skim a damp solid wall with the wrong material and it will blow within two winters. We identify what we are working with first and specify accordingly, even when it is not the cheapest answer.
Questions we get asked
Can you skim over artex?
Usually yes. If the artex is sound it can be skimmed straight over. Pre-2000 artex can contain asbestos, so if there is any doubt we test before disturbing it.
How long before I can paint new plaster?
New plaster needs to dry fully — typically two to four weeks depending on thickness, ventilation and time of year. We build that into the programme rather than rushing it and getting flaking later.
