The job

What actually happened

This room was eighteen feet long and barely eleven wide, with a chimney breast a third of the way along it that broke up every possible furniture layout. The client had been told by two firms to just wall-mount a TV on the chimney breast and live with it.

Instead we squared the whole end wall off. The media wall runs the full width, which pushes the chimney breast into the structure rather than leaving it sticking out, and creates deep storage in what used to be the alcoves.

The wall was set out around the exact fire and the exact television, so the reveals are tight and everything sits genuinely flush. Every cable runs inside — power, HDMI, aerial, network and a subwoofer feed the client has not used yet but wanted there in case.

Lighting is on three circuits: a wash down the face of the wall, warm light inside the shelving, and the fire itself. All dimmable, all on one plate by the door.
